The second edition of drum duos by the great pairing of avant-garde percussionists can hardly be dismissed as simply a free improvisation date between two drummers showing tricks, as one might expect. The complexity of their collective techniques make both artists' vocabulary considerably more than the word "drummers" could imply. Frequently mixing electronically affected percussion instruments and the skill of refined jazz performers, techniques of the avant-garde and experimental processes of electro-acoustic music are factors that are present -- as are a fair dose of humor and vaudeville energy. The result is two very compelling sets of improvisation that display the techniques of these masters in clear and candid fidelity. This rare album should be tracked down and given serious attention by those interested in free-improvisation and avant-garde music.
