This double LP from the Artistry label is particularly special because it contains three songs apiece on which Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie guest with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. Although those performances took place on the same day (Feb. 28, 1954), unfortunately Diz and Bird appear separately; Gillespie fares best. However this two-fer would be worth acquiring anyway due to the many swinging concert performances and the consistently exciting solos by such Kenton sidemen as altoist Lee Konitz, trombonist Frank Rosolino, trumpeter Conte Candoli and tenor-saxophonist Zoot Sims among others. With Bill Holman and Bill Russo contributing most of the arrangements and drummer Stan Levey driving the band, this is one of the better Stan Kenton collections from the 1950s.
