The Clarence Williams Orchestra, Vol. 2 (1927-1928) Review

by Scott Yanow

This Biograph LP from 1972 has some exciting performances from the small groups led by pianist Clarence Williams during 1927-28; all of the music has since been reissued on CD by Classics. While the first four tracks feature cornetist Ed Allen in a sextet, with clarinetist Buster Bailey and tenorman Coleman Hawkins on two numbers, the final 12 numbers also include King Oliver as second cornetist and tenor saxophonist Benny Waters. Among the more memorable tracks are "Bozo," "Bimbo," "Shooting the Pistol," "Wild Flower Rag" and "I Wish I Could Shimmy like My Sister Kate." Classic 1920s jazz.
