With his score for the BBC's lavish 1995 miniseries adaptation of Edith Wharton's unfinished novel The Buccaneers, composer Colin Towns interprets the classical sensibilities of mid-19th century Britain from a uniquely modern perspective, employing contemporary orchestral approaches to create a suite of lushly melodic themes that successfully straddle the centuries. Towns' evocation of Victorian-era England plainly invokes Wharton's literary spirit, exploring its subject with wit, intelligence and grace--the music is by turns romantic and bleak, with an underlying humanism that lingers long after the music fades out.
