The Best of Jennifer Holliday Review

by Bil Carpenter

Long-overdue compilation celebrating the erratic recording career of Jennifer Holliday. The set includes sixteen tracks, not all her best music; but enough of it to buoy the album title. Of course, the set boasts her signature tune "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" and "I Am Changing," both from Dream Girls. Her warm chart ballads "I Am Love," "Say You Love Me" and "I'm On Your Side" are here, as are her mediocre dance hits. There are a couple of previously unreleased jewels, such as the Bee Gees' "Love Me" and her Grammy winning cover of Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday." What's strangely missing is her tender "Mr. Magic" and hard-driving rendition of the early Gladys Knight & the Pips' "Giving Up."
