One of several Art Hodes solo piano albums for Euphonic, this fine LP (none of the Euphonics have yet been reissued on CD) features Hodes alternating slow, bluesy material with hotter tunes like Jelly Roll Morton's "Grandpa's Spells," "Pagin' Mr. Jelly" and even a credible rendition of "The Saints." The biggest departure of the album is "Watermelon Man," a Herbie Hancock song that does have the feeling of vintage jazz. Hodes is in fine form throughout, although technical imperfections with the recording process resulted in a few notes fluttering a bit.
