This is a strong breakthrough album for one of Australia's up-and-coming independent bands. The Apology Wars, produced by Jawbox/Burning Airlines singer J. Robbins, combines heartfelt, intelligent lyrics and melodies that range from biting to soaring. The band seems to take their cues from the hyper-conscious lyrics of the Smiths and the post-punk attack of American indie bands such as Jawbreaker and Knapsack. While the music may echo their predecessors, it is the lyrics, which are strong enough to stand alone as poetry, that truly make this a must-listen.
