There was a lot of great Texas garage rock recorded during the mid-'60s, but that doesn't necessarily justify issuing a dozen or so volumes of any old Texas garage music. That's what Cicadelic did, though, with very erratic results; there are occasional gems, but in general these albums will only interest the serious collector. Volume one has 12 cuts, a few previously unreleased, that are basic, unexceptional derivations of groups like the Stones, Zombies, and Yardbirds. The highlight is the Chevelle V's "Smokestack Lightning" knockoff "Come Back Bird," although it had already been reissued as part of the Flashback series.
