The fast-paced but predictable Terminal Velocity is a standard-issue action score. Joel McNeely offers few twists on the genre's conventions, but his melodies are strong, his arrangements are dynamic, and his thematic development is assured. Working with a mid-sized orchestral ensemble, McNeely never achieves the visceral transcendence some listeners expect from their action scores, but at the same time he also sidesteps the sonic overkill that so many other listeners abhor. Indeed, Terminal Velocity is perfectly modulated to the low-brow onscreen action, complementing but never overtaking the unfolding narrative. That said, as a distinct listening experience it's mostly forgettable, interchangeable with any one of dozens of mid-'90s action soundtracks. Recommended for serious genre enthusiasts only.
