Teimo/Permafrost Review

by Jim Brenholts

Komer Thomas has done for the polar ice caps what Steve Roach has done for the American Southwest. Thomas has put the ice caps on the musical map. Tiemo/Perma Frost is a double CD of two of his classic albums. And his minimalism is full of imagery and vivid colors. They are cold colors -- blue, silver, white, and gray. The grays are bright and vivid. This is NOT dark ambience, but it is desolate and removed. Thomas paints a vast soundscape and then helps listeners lose themselves. Entering Thomas's soundworld is a dangerous proposition. It is not for the weak of spirit. But experiencing and surviving the journey is quite rewarding. Those listeners were lost and now are found. This CD will appeal to fans of Brian Eno, Paul Sauvanet, Darshan Ambient, and Oophoi. For collectors of minimalism, it is essential.
