For his fifth album, Tapeba Songs, Ivo Perelman visited Sao Paulo and completed a trilogy of Brazilian children's songs that had started with the tenor saxman's 1989 debut Ivo (which focused on Euro-Brazilian melodies) and left off with 1991's Afro-Brazilian-oriented Children of Ibeji. For this outstanding CD, Perelman explored the music of Brazil's Tapeba Indian tribe. "Sara Mussara," "Nere Nembu," "Agua De Manim" and other selections are based on traditional Tapeba melodies, but what Perelman does with them is anything but traditional, turning them into explosive avant-garde jazz and approaching them in an intensely personal fashion. Like his previous releases, Tapeba Songs left no doubt that Perelman was among the most risk-taking jazzmen of the 1990s.
