Displaced's third outing finds principals Jen Jansen and Simon Mandel snapping the dynamic between their voices like a rubber band against a backdrop of amped-up, tradition-minded indie rock, and the usual reliance on volatile Pixies dynamics. "Sugary Pile" is like a stripped down Queens of the Stone Age with its insistent thump and explosive guitar freakouts, while "Grizzled Greg" fills in odd, interesting (and a little foreboding) lyrics around crunchy guitars, and an initial, spidery hook that's right out of the duo's Brooklyn roots. Overall, Tango With the Man is as strong an effort as the earlier, self-titled EP; together, the recordings mark a band still finding its voice among their influences, but continuing to write with fervor and rock with zeal.
