The time is a bit brief on this LP (just a little over 31 minutes) but the quality is quite high. Cornetist Red Nichols (who used two different groups during the two-day period) lives up to the title's name, playing exquisite versions of such songs as "Three Blind Mice," "Candlelights," "I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me," "Manhattan Rag" and even "Easter Parade." Although the individual solos of Nichols, clarinetist Matty Matlock, bass saxophonist Joe Rushton and either King Jackson or Ted Veseley on trombone are excellent, it is the unpredictable arrangements (which have inventive use of space, dynamics and unusual harmonies) that make this a particularly memorable set.
