The Surface of Jupiter is, unfortunately, a slight step down from previous Renderers' releases like That Dog's Head. The group's drawling, country-tinged jangle is still intact, but it lacks some of the texture that's necessary to make this sound truly interesting, and the occasional turn to dirty rock lessens the sense of sonic purity the album might otherwise have had. This is, however, only a slight step down -- those who enjoy the band's work will doubtlessly find the album appealing, if not quite as pleasant as some other records.
