El Guapo's Super/System is sure to confuse many people. That confusion will most likely lie in the fact that, when it comes to Dischord Records, many indie rock fans are accustomed to one type of sound: that Fugazi-esque D.C. sound. There's no set of rules to define this sound, but if someone says, "It's got a D.C. sound," most in the independent scene would know the general sound of the music without hearing it. Suffice it to say that the "D.C. sound" description doesn't work here. This is 18 tracks of weird noises, hip dance beats, squeaking instruments, and computer-manipulated sounds. At times it's fun to tap your foot to, but more often than not it borders on annoying. Surely El Guapo would be a rippin' live show to check out (how the band would pull all this off would be fun to see), but it's really hard to imagine that anyone would want to listen to Super/System on a regular basis.
