Despite Islam's ambivalent attitude to music, Koranic recitation is at the heart of the music religious incantations of the Islamic world. The Sufi mystical brotherhoods use music and dance to induce religious ecstasy, one of many reasons why they are suspect in the eyes of orthodox theologians. In this CD you get the pure religious sound in its pristine form, and instrumental preludes to Sufi ceremonies are played on the nay flute backed by percussion, in a style near to classical music (the Sufis were in fact guardians of the Middle Eastern classical tradition for a while). As a plus, there are English notes for a change.
