Johnny Duncan's slick, sometimes Caribbean-flavored country music is heard on his 1979 album Straight from Texas, including the hit "The Lady in the Blue Mercedes" and a cover of "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me." Elsewhere, Duncan adopts a somewhat harder country sound that is significantly less dated and more appealing. "My Woman's Good to Me" and "Runaway Housewife" are examples of the latter, and are reminiscent of Bob Luman's Epic recordings. Duncan has a great voice, but isn't as well remembered today as might be expected for an artist who charted nearly 40 hits; the reason might have something to do with the dated production style on many of his big hits. "Would You Like to Spend the Night (With a Memory)" is an example of a quality album track with a strong hook that keeps the pop gloss in check, and is one of a few such recordings that redeem an otherwise lukewarm album.
