AllMusic Review by

The first volume in the Standing on the Corner (Watching the Girls Go By) series assembles 20 classics from the golden age of the popular crooner. Cherry-picking highlights from the Capitol and Liberty vaults now under EMI's corporate control, the disc is as much a showcase for the singer as it is for the song, creating a listening experience that's both wonderfully timeless and palpably nostalgic. Songs like Vic Damone's "Wives and Lovers," Danny Williams' "Moon River," and Dean Martin's title cut evoke a long-ago oasis of broads, booze, and bright lights. The music is hip yet hackneyed, innocent yet cloaked in mystery and intrigue. And while there's nothing rare or previously unreleased to lure collectors, it's nevertheless a well-chosen and handsomely packaged introduction for younger listeners curious to hear what the fuss is all about.
