Two different but very similar-sounding sets are included on this CD. Ten songs feature the great swing clarinetist Peanuts Hucko in 1979 leading his Pied Piper Quintet, a group also starring vibraphonist Peter Appleyard and pianist Ross Tompkins. They play in a Benny Goodman Quartet style on such numbers as "Riverboat Shuffle," "Avalon," "Memories of You," and "East of the Sun." To fill out this reissue, pianist John Sheridan, vibraphonist John Cocuzzi, and clarinetist Ron Hockett star on five numbers by the Sine Qua Non Sextet, recorded in 2004. Hockett sounds a bit like Hucko on this date and at times it is not obvious which session one is listening to, though the liner notes list everything clearly. This logical program is easily recommended to fans of swing and Benny Goodman, and serves as a fine tribute to the late Peanuts Hucko.
