Sorta Dixie Review

by Scott Yanow

This is a rather silly record. Arranger Billy May pays "tribute" to Dixieland by essentially tearing apart eight trad standards, plus "Sorta Blues." He uses a bewildering assortment of instruments (including many woodwinds, calliope, celeste, orchestra bells, xylophone, tympani, triangle and harp) in addition to an oversized big band, and turns such songs as "Oh By Jingo," "Sugar Foot Strut," "Panama" and "The Sheik of Araby" into novelty tunes. A cute but far from essential LP.
