Chen also writes especially for what he calls the "loud-speakers." He sees this as an independent art form from his composing music for the traditional concert stage. He uses a global approach to his music, employing jazz, classical, pop, new age, and avant-garde styles as facets of his expansive, holistic music view. Songs From Within is an excellent example of Chen's shrinking world contemporary chamber compositions.
