This LP has performances taken from some of the broadcasts of The Chamber Society of Lower Basin Street, a program that satirized the pretentiousness of some classical music shows while featuring notable jazz artists. On this album Jelly Roll Morton is heard during his last recorded appearance and there are spots for Charlie and Jack Teagarden, pianist Joe Sullivan, clarinetist Pee Wee Russell, cornetist Bobby Hackett, vibraphonist Lionel Hampton, soprano saxophonist Sidney Bechet (in exciting form), the Count Basie rhythm section, drummer Zutty Singleton and trumpeter Roy Eldridge. Most of the guests sat in with the fine house band led by trumpeter Hot Lips Levine and many of these performances are quite memorable. Highly recommended.
