Slovakian music is based in the Eastern European cultures, yet its people have developed unique instruments and forms of music not found in the surrounding countries. The two main instruments used in Slovakia are the flute and the bagpipe. They have created types of flutes found nowhere else in the word, and they also have unique bagpipes that are for 2 to 5 voices. As in most East European countries, the violin is also an instrument of choice. Slovakian instrumental music developed from shepherd songs, the voice playing an important role, as it does still today. The music heard on this CD comes from the region of Polana in central Slovakia. It gives an excellent overview of the diversity of Slovakian music. There are examples of all of the flutes, as well as the two- and three-pipe bagpiges, and, of course, songs and violins. For fans of Eastern European music, this is a must. It is also a must for others, of course!
