On this album, Burl Ives doesn't sing his own country hits -- although he had several -- but those of other artists. Ives, in tandem with the Anita Kerr Singers, created a distinctive, airy sound on his Nashville recordings in the '60s, and Sings the Great Country Hits lands right in that groove. Ives covers four decades of country music, from "You Are My Sunshine" to recent hits. Over half of the dozen tracks are associated with Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, or Hank Williams. As for the song selection, there are no surprises in the bunch, but Ives' style and presentation are so unique that it hardly matters. The overhauled arrangements and Ives' instantly recognizable voice mark the songs as his own -- as long as the record is playing.
