To paraphrase the old advertising slogan, when Sidney Poitier talks, people listen -- the actor's rich, resonant voice is a perfect fit for the spoken word medium, and Sidney Poitier Reads Poetry of the Black Man proves an undeniably powerful listening experience. Joined by collaborators including actress Doris Belack, jazz percussionist Gordon "Specs" Powell, and the Brooks Male Chorus, Poitier brings to each reading a theatrical dimension, couching his presence in austere musical accompaniment and quirky sound effects that underscore the poignancy and intensity of the verse. Poitier nevertheless remains front and center, delivering with uncommon authority and grace landmark poems by Langston Hughes, James Weldon Johnson, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Countee Cullen, and others.
