Big bands found it very rough going in the '60s. Although he always led a superb band, Count Basie's recordings during this decade were quite streaky with the orchestra often misused behind a variety of dubious vocalists. Showtime is an instrumental set but mostly pretty horrendous with the big band playing commercial arrangements written for 20 unsuitable showtunes. Just imagine Basie's crew roaring through "Strangers in the Night;" it's even worse than one would expect.
