With this CD, the well-known Japanese shakuhachi master Katsuya Yokoyama offers a blend of traditional works with original contemporary compositions, two of which are his own: a shakuhachi duet and a piece for shakuhachi and electronic organ. The two other original works include a piece for shakuhachi trio by Seihô Kineya and one for six shakuhachis by Ichiro Seki. Except for Seki's work, which is an avant-garde piece, the other three pieces -- although modern -- clearly retain a character typical of traditional shakuhachi music. Yokoyama and the evolution of the shakuhachi are clearly synonymous here. As for the traditional pieces, three are solo and the other is the well-known shakuhachi piece "Shika No Tône," which can be performed in solo or in a duet. Here he plays it in a duet with one of his students. High-quality music for fans of Japanese music.
