Shadows A's B's & EP's Review

by Dave Thompson

Check out the track listing and, big surprise, it's just one more motley collection of the Shadows' greatest hits, to line up alongside however many score of the things that have already been plastered across the shelves. But look closer! For these are not your run-of-the-mill revivals. Rather, somebody took the time and the trouble to return not only to the archive, but also to an era when all records sounded this great, in sharp and deliciously defined monophonic, and when they crackled out of the radio there was no other music that mattered. These 24 tracks delve into the band's titular catalog of singles and four-song EP collections to haul out the sound of the '60s with no hindsight attached. Stereo mixes of this material abound, and they're great. But if you really want to hear what the Shadows intended, this collection is the next best thing to the vinyl. Even better, there's plenty of room for a few more volumes as well.
