All of the releases from the DRG Swing LP reissue series are recommended to fans of early swing although this particular album is less essential than most of the others. Louis Armstrong is heard on eight of his earlier big band recordings (including "I Can't Give You Anything but Love," "St. Louis Blues" and "Song of the Islands") but those performances are readily available in more complete fashion on CD. Side two of this LP is much rarer, eight songs featuring the long-forgotten but colorful trumpeter Jack Purvis (his only recordings as a leader) in three different groups with such sidemen as trombonist J.C. Higginbotham, tenor-saxophonist Coleman Hawkins and bass saxophonist Adrian Rollini. Purvis holds his own and a highlight is his unusual recording of "Copyin' Louis"; pity that Purvis's performances were not coupled with more obscure recordings by other artists.
