The Italian label Europa has put out a series of LPs featuring top American jazz artists in rare live performances. This album features trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie in four different settings, playing "Things to Come" with his 1957 big band, jamming "Be Bop" and "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" with his small groups and backing Sarah Vaughan on "Embraceable You." In addition Charles Mingus's 1959 septet performs his ambitious "Pithecanthropus Erectus" and Maynard Ferguson (probably from the mid-'60s) is featured on two numbers with a Czechoslovakian big band. This album is worth investigating.
