Salute to Newport Review

by Scott Yanow

This out-of-print double LP reissues Pee Wee Russell's 1959 Dot album with trumpeter Buck Clayton, trombonist Vic Dickenson and veteran tenor Bud Freeman along with a particularly hot session from Impulse by George Wein's Newport All-Stars (which also includes Freeman along with cornetist Ruby Braff and trombonist Marshall Brown) from 1962. The earlier record is fine but The Newport All-Stars (whose exciting performance is highlighted by such tunes as "At the Jazz Band Ball," Freeman's feature on "Crazy Rhythm" and Russell's "The Bends Blues") is the reason to search for this set.
