One of the more interesting performers of the last 50 years, Charles Brown has not been best-served by the myriad of posthumous collections that have surfaced since his death, and it's easy to see Sail on Blues as being one of far too many budget releases of the singer's material. This release collects some of Brown's earliest work, presenting it in a rather scattershot manner that does no favors to Brown's considerable legacy. Of course, there are great performances contained, especially the title cut and "Blue Because of You," but there are fine releases of this period of Brown's career, covering the artist with intelligence and respect. Unfortunately, Sail on Blues does neither, and it's probably best avoided.
