AllMusic Review by

This CD reissue reunites two original releases by the virtuoso flutist Altamiro Carrilho: Rio Antigo (Old Rio) from 1970 and Chôros Imortais (Immortal Choros) from 1964, both recorded through the Copacabana label. The former is a gracious handful of belle époque classics and Carrilho's originals inspired in the old marches, dobrados, maxixes, and other old Carioca styles; even the influence of the northeastern forró is registered here. The second album brings an excellent selection of some of the biggest choro classics, by such composers as Pixinguinha and Jacob Bittencourt, the Jacó do Bandolim. Everything is exquisitely played by Carrilho on flute and piccolo, with plenty of choro improvisations and classical music references, backed by a typical choro regional. A must-have.
