BMG Special Products' The Encore Collection is actually a very good collection of Rick Springfield's biggest hits for RCA, considering that it was produced as a budget-line collection. All of his Top Ten hits -- "Jessie's Girl," "I've Done Everything for You," "Don't Talk to Strangers," "Affair of the Heart," "Love Somebody" -- are here, along with such album tracks and smaller hits as "Calling All Girls," "Don't Walk Away" and "Take a Hand." Sure, some minor hits as "Love Is Alright Tonite" and "Human Touch" are missed, but this isn't meant to be a comprehensive hits collection -- it's a budget-priced sampler, and judged along those terms, it's quite good. Nevertheless, serious casual fans (if there is such a thing) should stick with the full-fledged greatest hits and pick up Working Class Dog, which remains one of the great underrated pop-rock albums of the early '80s.
