Since both "Ribbon" and its flip side, "Who Needs Light," have been collected on the Incidental Music compilation, it's ridiculous to advise seeking out the original 7" -- except that like all truly great singles, it's best appreciated as a slab of vinyl, with no other songs digitally sequenced before it or after. So do this: isolate "Ribbon" by programming it to the exclusion of the rest of the CD and contemplate its perfection; consider not just its quintessential Superchunk guitar riff, insistent melody, and Mac McCaughan's impassioned vocals, but also the subtle differences that guarantee the Superchunk formula never gets old, from the unexpected and obscenely clever bridge to the furious drum outro at the climax. Then listen to it again, because that's what great singles are for.
