Revive!: Demos & Rarities 2001-2008 Review

by Matt Collar

Revive!: Demos & Rarities 2001-2008 features recordings made by former Teenage Fanclub/Soup Dragons drummer-turned-singer/songwriter Paul Quinn and his main creative partner Ryan Currie prior to the recording of the Primary 5's 2008 album High Five. The story goes that Currie's schedule found him unable to work on that album, and he and Quinn parted ways before entering the studio. Subsequently, Quinn conscripted his former-Soup Dragon bandmate, guitarist Jim McCullough, to record the final versions that made up High Five. While that album is a stellar representation of Quinn's work as a singer/songwriter, Currie's musical insight and creative viewpoint might have pushed the album in a slightly different direction, and it is interesting to hear that on these demos. Also included here are three previously unreleased tracks, "That's the Way," "Wishful Thinking" and "The Beat Goes On" which fit perfectly next to Quinn's other melodic, guitar-based, folk-rock tunes. For Primary 5 fans who have longed for a follow-up to High Five or anyone who simply relishes sparkling, well-crafted pop/rock, Revive! is both a fitting summation of a fruitful musical partnership and a reminder of Quinn's songwriting talent: an all-too-well-kept Scottish secret.
