Casual fans who don't want to drop the extra money for the comprehensive two-disc set of songs from director Chris Columbus' big-screen adaptation of the popular musical Rent will find that all of their favorites from the gritty New York City rock opera are dutifully represented on this 17-track highlights disc. Based on Puccini's La Boheme, Rent follows the trials and tribulations of a group of East Village bohemian twentysomethings as they deal with love, life, poverty, and AIDS. Columbus managed to secure the entire Broadway cast for the film, who along with newcomer Rosario Dawson give each track their all. Standout cuts like "Light the Candle," "I Should Tell You," "One Song Glory," and "Tango: Maureen" are impeccably recorded and fleshed out, yet remain faithful to their stage origins.
