AllMusic Review by

Rent-a-Cop proves one of Jerry Goldsmith's most idiosyncratic and atypical scores--its nimble jazz-rock sound evokes the spirit of Bill Conti's early-Eighties work, emphasizing mood and texture over the visceral action the onscreen narrative would seem to require. Goldsmith's main theme ranks among his most conventional pop-inspired efforts, and while it's a charmer, it nevertheless establishes a feather-light tone that feels inappropriate given the movie's tough-guy spirit--far better is the score's evocation of the onscreen romance between stars Burt Reynolds and Liza Minnelli, with fanciful piano and lush strings sharply delineating the rituals of their mating dance. It's a misfire, to be sure, but far from a total washout.
