This is a homemade release, right down to the J.C. Penney photography. As such, it offers a more original conception than many albums of its kind. The music consists of Christmas tunes arranged for flute and piano, sometimes with a second flute added, sometimes with the piano subtracted, sometimes with the flute altered to a piccolo or alto flute. No musician other than flutist Cathleen Arhelger and pianist Jan Matson is named, raising the question of whether the two-flute pieces employed overdubbing. That would be odd for an album like this, especially in view of the otherwise decidedly low-tech sound, but the rather mechanical tempos that show up in the music suggest that it might indeed have happened. The selection of pieces is delightful, with very familiar carols interspersed with more novel older pieces and selections from various national traditions. Arhelger mixes her own arrangements with those drawn from several other flute or vocal anthologies, and the blend is seamless. The warm tone and agile ornamentation of Arhelger's flute is another point of attraction. Those with a connection to this performer or her circle in Minnesota's Twin Cities will enjoy this seasonal release, and one imagines that Garrison Keillor might be able to work it into one of his Lake Wobegon monologues.
