AllMusic Review by

Regal Zonophone & Beyond is another excellent multi-disc set in this series devoted to classic Australian country artists. Rick Carey & Thel began recording for the Regal Zonophone label in 1954, and with their thoroughly American-style country show that included rube comedy and many covers of U.S. country songs, went on to become Australia's Mr. and Mrs. Country. Thel was a talented songwriter who sang with a distinctive hiccup, but the recordings she made with her husband have a rough and ramshackle quality that would have kept them at a regional rather than national level had they been American artists. The Careys seldom expressed their Australian heritage through their songs, unlike Slim Dusty, Buddy Williams, and Smoky Dawson. Regal Zonophone & Beyond covers 71 recordings from the duo's first single through the end of their 25-year stint with EMI, covering a wide variety of country & western songs. It's a small miracle that EMI Music Australia has honored their classic country artists with the Regal Zonophone series, since some of the artists are not well remembered, even in their own country.
