Red Ampersand was mostly recorded directly to a Portastudio, with occasional improvisation -- Salamander lay out murky, Krautrocky grooves and build them quite nicely as distant vocals drift beneath the mix. The result almost compares to Cul de Sac's better work, which is no small compliment. The six tracks on Red Ampersand rarely falter, and typically manage to get past "experimental" or improvisational chaos into something palpable, organized, and very appealing.
