AllMusic Review by

Rebels and Outlaws: Music From the Wild Side of Life compiles 14 traditional country classics linked by their themes of bloodlust, murder, and revenge; its tongue-in-cheek kitsch value aside, the set nevertheless spotlights some of the most enduring songs in the country canon, including Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues," Faron Young's "Live Fast, Love Hard, Die Young," Marty Robbins' "The Big Iron," and the Louvin Brothers' "Knoxville Girl." Also included is Spade Cooley ("You Clobbered Me") who, unlike most of his contemporaries, lived out the songs he sang, stomping wife Ella Mae to death in 1961.
