Ravens in Moonlight Review

by Matt Borghi

Lee Ellen Shoemaker is the Tunnel Singer, a performance artist who sings in tunnels, parking garages, and other spaces that offer lots of reverberation. Her work is unique and is showcased well on all of her recordings. Shoemaker's music utilizes vocal improvisation to unify random sounds, creating instruments of music from tunnels, stairwells, and parking garages that are hauntingly beautiful. She embraces a tonal language of emotional content that speaks from an organic and earthy, grounded place. Her powerful vocals are extremely warm and take the listener on a profound sonic journey. Her music could best be compared to Jim Cole & the Spectral Voices, David Hykes, and is quite similar to some of the things that Pauline Oliveros has. The tracks that make up Ravens in Moonlight are excellent and speak to a profoundly resonant aesthetic. Shoemaker brings her work to life clearly and eloquently. This music is great for contemplation, listening, and daydreaming. Excellent and profoundly accessible work.
