The music on this CD from the Austrian RST label mostly lives up to its title. The liner notes are unfortunately in German, but the music is generally worthwhile. Trumpeter Bobby Sax is heard during five titles from 1932-33 playing early swing, Bob's Rhythm Kings (in 1934-35) interpret a couple of American standards, pianist Ernst Landl in 1944 perfoms two takes of "Steffl Swing," a swing group from 1948-49 (Die Rhythmische Sieben) is excellent, and the final seven titles (from 1950) display the influence of bop; among the personnel of the latter date are trumpeter Trummy Young and altoist Red Allen (no relation to their American counterparts on trombone and trumpet). Although certainly not essential, the obscure music shows that there have been talented jazz musicians living in Europe for quite a few decades by now.
