This CD contains eight Big Country performances recorded in the studios of BBC Radio 1. The band's drummer described this release as "barrel scraping," which seems a bit unfair. Radio 1 Sessions is not without its flaws, but its biggest crime seems to have been that it was released a decade too late. The first four songs were recorded in December 1982, while the final four are from a year later, in September 1983. All of the songs here are old Big Country tunes, with six from 1983's The Crossing, and two eventually from 1984's The Wonderland EP. The hundreds of thousands of fans is the U.S. who bought their debut (and nothing else by the band) would have liked this set in 1984. The raw version of "1000 Stars" should remind everyone what a tight band Big Country was. The glaring omission of "In a Big Country" and "Fields of Fire," coupled with the inclusion of two versions of "Close Action" (they are indistinguishable), make this a non-essential record for all but collectors.
