AllMusic Review by

Released in 1994, this is the album that really established Why? as a legitimate participant in the growing field of early-'90s alternative British folk-rock. With a style that mirrors that of Eden Burning, Why? also resurrects the Waterboys' Celtic sound that made albums like Fisherman's Blues and Room to Roam so appealing. Their more rocking songs resemble the Levellers as heard on Levelling the Land and A Weapon Called the Word. Primarily acoustic, Rachel Says Boo! is defined by the interaction of fiddle, acoustic guitar, and mandolin in conjunction with the driving rhythm provided by bass and drums. Ant Parker's lead vocals resemble those of Mike Scott, especially on the slower, more introspective songs; however, it's the uptempo selections that give this band personality and distinction.
