AllMusic Review by

Easily the most obscure and obtuse item in the Spiritualized catalog, Pure Phase Tones for D.J.'s is also the purest distillation of Jason Pierce's singularly obsessive aesthetic -- consisting of nothing more than a serpentine electronic drone played back at different frequencies (16 total, allowing for differences in 33- and 45-rpm playback), the record as a whole conjures a kind of disembodied weightlessness central to the overarching Spiritualized experience. There are no vocals, drums, or anything else conventionally musical -- or, for that matter, conventionally human -- here, just a series of spectral tones inching their way across the cosmos.
