AllMusic Review by

Pretending to Fall opens with the immensely likeable "Buzzsaw Puzzle," which steeps syncopated repetitions and distant vocals in layers and layers of fuzz -- but the album takes some unfortunate turns from there on. This is a shame, since Real Cool Rain's shoegazing and dreampop influences tend to work in their favor -- when tracks like "Pep Rally" fall into standard indie moves, with dynamics that explode at the most predictable points, it's easy to long for the multirhythmic buzz of their better tracks. Pretending to Fall delivers on this in spots, but a rather conventional air pervades the remainder -- the record only seems notable when the band is willing to stare at their footwear and lay on the haze.
