An entry in the French world music label Planett's Chants et Musiques du Monde series, this disc shoehorns 21 tracks into just over 46 minutes. Ranging from the sedate guitar and vocals of the ballad "Les Yeux Noirs" to the stomping rhythms and multiple accordions of "Cana Verde," the songs are a varied lot showing off many sides of Portugal's musical culture. As might be expected, a few songs sound similar to the traditional music of Brazil, a country largely settled by Portuguese immigrants. While hardly the last word on the subject, this is a fine introduction to Portuguese music for the novice.
