The opening cuts of the fourth volume in CDM's Bulgarian anthology, both vocal and instrumental, are beautiful but almost disconcertingly austere. On later tracks, devoted to urban music in the region's south, things get jollier and more familiar. But it is the ancient music of the mountains, with all its starkness, that sticks in the mind. The music is superb, but the notes are shoddy by the usual high CDM standard.
